The AIADMK party establishment completed its 50 years this Sunday. Actor-Politician MG Ramachandran announced the formation of new party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on October 18, 1972, which was initially named Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

All this began in Thirukazhukundram, on 8th of October, when MGR, the then Treasurer of DMK raised questions on the ruling party to make the details on the party assets public, strongly criticizing the government for lifting prohibitions and not implementing the policies of C. N. Annadurai, the founder of DMK.

As a result of conflicting opinions, the treasurer MGR was suspended from the party, and the news was published of the party’s disciplinary action on October 11. The DMK Party President, M Karunanidhi and General secretary of the party and Education minister V.R. Nedunchezian made the decision of suspending MGR, on the basis of the requisition of 26 of the 31 party members of the DMK executive. Nedunchezian had later annexed himself with the AIADMK in the 1970s.

However, Chief minister M. Karunanidhi stated that M.G. Ramachandran never spoke to him about the rejection of policies of C. N. Annadurai by the party. Fans of Dr. M. G. Ramachandran lowered the flags of DMK and burnt the portrait of Chief minister Karunanidhi and started protests from Vellore to Tirunelveli. MGR received the news of him being suspended from the party while he was shooting for the film Netru Indru Naalai. MGR’s statement post the news read that he just wanted to “prove the honesty” of DMK, against the charges of corruption raised by the opposition.

The following events happened in a swift, as the DMK executive upheld with the general secretary’s decision to suspend the party's treasurer, on October 13th. With the general council following the suit on the next day, the chief minister termed the events 'painful and agonising', as he was put in a position to take the drastic step. He had also commented that MGR had 'cast aspersions on the integrity of the lakhs of party workers’.

The very next day a youth set himself ablaze, to express his support to MGR on his expulsion.

Later MGR formed a separate party, ADMK, which was earlier registered by Anakaputhur Ramalingam. Ramalingam had given up his position for MGR, and this gained the former the position of MLC in the party. The party was also renamed as AIADMK, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Karunanidhi stated that MGR achieved what he wanted. AIADMK gained huge support, with numerous members from the DMK annexing themselves to MGR's party.
