We sure would have come across the word Ashure quiet frequently in the recent past, and the meaning behind it is a delicious, nutrient rich dessert that is to-date 'the oldest dessert' in the world. Dating back to the period when Noah and the group survived the great flood, the dessert is also called the Noah's pudding
Ashura, pronounced as Ashure is a Turkish dessert, originated in Armenia. Also called the Noah's Pudding, the dessert, as the legend has it, was first prepared by Noah. Noah prepared this dish with whatever he could find on the Ark, after the flood, ranging from fruits, nuts to legumes. Cooking them all together in a pot, the resulting dish was a pudding. The dessert thus travelled to Turkish Kitchens over the ages.
The Noah's pudding apart from being the most delicious dessert is also rich in carbohydrates and calories, that helps you keep you warm, and good for the immune system during winters. With nuts, legumes, and fruits the pudding is also a bowl of vitamins B, E, iron and calcium.
The dessert Ashure, is exclusively made during the month of Muharram in Turkey, the month of Ashura. The dessert is prepared with its traditional fervour on the day 10, the Day of Ashura, reportedly the day when Noah and the the other survivors were washed up on the Mount Ararat.
The dessert takes the shape of a pudding when served cold and is in the form of a porridge when served hot. As per the Turkish Tradition, the Ashura is prepared in large quantities in order to share it with maximum possible people, which would in turn bring the givers 'bereket'- blessings, abundance and peace
