Exploring different foods that are unique to different regions is a wild quest humankind has ventured into on a large scale. And that is not just restricted to 'food', but to the available naturally edible fruits, veggies and flora. The geographical diversity is key factor in identifying the eccentricity of the region. One such special fruit of the US is the 'Paw Paw' fruit, that largely grows on the edible fruit trees in North America, from Florida to Southern Canada.
But, did you know that most Americans are unaware of this Paw Paw fruit? They have never heard of it, seen it, nor have they tasted it. The tropical fruit has a bright, incongruous taste of a mango-banana-citrus fruit with a bitter. floral aftertaste. The fruit jells well with the desserts, and all the recipes that involve bananas. The major reason behind the fruit remaining a mystery is that the farmers have shunned the cultivation of pawpaw and hence are not sold on a large scale.
The fruit needs an environment that is constantly wet, very low and most importantly, the harvested fruit spoils faster, thus making it a huge loss for the commercial farmers. However, avid food lovers, chefs of the North America have joined hands now in reviving their most favourite fruit back and making it available for this generation, before it could possibly die with them.
The Paw Paw is harvested in the last few weeks of late summer or early autumn. The tree grows up to 25 feet, bearing fruits after four to eight years. the fruit belongs to the custard apple family. It is a rich nutrient fruit that consists of copper, zinc, magnesium, amino acids, antioxidants, Vitamin C. Paw Paw was much famous fall fruit in the early 1900s, also fastly forgotten in the following years.
Researchers, food bloggers, chefs, plant breeders are now on a mission to revive the fruit back and are organizing an annual Pawpaw Festival in Albany, each September. The festival will take place this year as well
Michael Judd, author of 'For the Love of Pawpaw: A Mini Manual for Growing and Caring for Paw Paw-From Seed to Table, will be hosting this year's Paw Paw Festival
